Time-limit privileged access

Replace standing administrator rights with access scoped to a task, resource and time window; define request, approval, expiry and audit steps.

Key takeaway

JIT does not make access safe by itself. Tie each request to verified identity, a specific task, minimum permissions, an expiry time and a later review.

Define the task, resource and access window

Just-in-Time (JIT) access grants elevated permissions on demand for a specific task and limited time. For example, an administrator can receive a temporary role to diagnose one server instead of permanent rights across all systems. Record the person or application identity, target resource, action, reason and expiry. Authenticate people with multifactor authentication (MFA) and device checks. Automation cannot answer a human MFA challenge: use a separate application identity, minimum permissions and short-lived credentials where supported. JIT limits duration while least privilege limits scope; both are needed.

Set approval and automatic access revocation

Set approval rules by risk: an approved low-impact task may qualify for an automated decision, while access affecting production, data or a broad system scope may need a separate authorized approval. Use a short default window, require a new justified request for extensions, and revoke access when the task ends or the window expires. Maintain a separate emergency-access process when normal access is unavailable, with notification and a later review.

Log sessions and review permissions

Keep the request, decision, granted role, session time and actions in an investigation-ready log. For sensitive systems, follow applicable legal and internal rules for session or command recording. Review unused roles, access extensions and automation accounts regularly. If a system cannot support JIT, use minimum standing rights, MFA for people, monitoring and a regular manual revocation process. Test when the role, open sessions and tokens stop working after expiry; revoking a role may not immediately end every application session.
