Key takeaway
Create policies for data classes and egress channels, test them in a pilot, and govern exceptions by owner, reason and expiry.
Coverage and deployment
A DLP agent can discover and classify content and apply rules on supported managed endpoints. Verify the OS, browser, application, file-type and action matrix. Mobile management and app controls can differ from desktop agent DLP. Define offline behavior and unmanaged-personal-device boundaries; installing an agent does not replace a data map and sound policy.
| Coverage dimension | Question to verify | Test evidence |
|---|---|---|
| OS and device | Are the platform and agent supported? | Sample file copied or blocked |
| Channel and application | Are this browser, USB and printing action covered? | Allowed and denied transfer results |
| File and classifier | Are the file type and content sample recognized? | Correct synthetic-sample classification |
| Offline behavior and policy updates | How do cached rules and new policies behave? | Cached-rule result and delayed event upload |
Three core uses
First, discover and classify: locate personal, health and payment information, plus structured and unstructured intellectual property. Second, govern use: flag apps, printing or copying that do not fit a role and identify the file owner. Third, prevent leakage: alert on, block or route for approval transfers through USB, printers, email or web apps; test file-type and context conditions with examples. Printing, USB, email and browser actions vary by product and application; test each allowed and denied flow.
Privacy and compliance
Collect only events needed to protect defined data and work channels. Restrict investigation access, set retention and assign owners. Check notices and requirements applicable to this deployment; a policy alone does not establish authority to collect all personal activity. Assign owners for classification and reporting obligations.
Keep policies working remotely
Off the corporate network, a sensitive file might leave through USB, personal email, a synchronization app, printer or upload to another app. Endpoint policies may run from cached rules while offline; check the provider’s offline behavior and update delivery. Define approved tools and removable-media controls, and keep lost-device response and session revocation as separate procedures. Cached-rule enforcement does not imply live reporting or immediate delivery of new policies.
Test, alert and respond
Start in monitoring mode across file examples, departments and device types. Decide who reviews events, who approves business exceptions and what triggers a block. Route alerts into EDR and incident response, with owners for restoration and user communication. To send DLP events to EDR or response systems, verify the integration and receipt of the event separately.
