Key takeaway
Check actual integrations and decision authority alongside tool categories. Test the signal’s handoff through analysis, action and closure.
Start with the work to be done
Threat management connects services and tools for detection, investigation, analysis and response. Define who reviews a signal, makes a decision and approves a change. A penetration test exercises controls within an agreed scope; an incident response plan coordinates decisions during an actual compromise. These are different jobs from routine vulnerability scanning.
Testing and incident response
For a penetration test, agree on cloud, network and application scope, written authorization, timing, prohibited methods, data handling and stop conditions. The report should include validated findings, impact, evidence and remediation guidance; a retest checks whether the fix worked. For ransomware, malware or prolonged intrusion, define roles, evidence preservation, authority to isolate systems, legal and leadership communications, and backup recovery steps in advance. An outside team fills a gap only when handoff and escalation are clear.
How EDR, XDR, SIEM and SOAR differ
Endpoint detection and response (EDR), extended detection and response (XDR), security information and event management (SIEM), and security orchestration, automation and response (SOAR) have different main roles. Categories can overlap and capabilities vary by implementation. Automation does not turn an inaccurate signal into a reliable decision; verify data quality and action authority separately.
| Tool | Main role | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| EDR | Endpoint evidence, investigation and response | Supported devices and permitted actions |
| XDR | Correlation across connected security sources | Actual integrations and gaps |
| SIEM | Central log collection, correlation and alerts | Source quality, retention and rule maintenance |
| SOAR | Coordination and automation of workflows | Permissions, approvals and recovery from failed actions |
Managed services and selection criteria
If internal expertise or on-call capacity is limited, an MSSP/MDR may provide monitoring, threat hunting, technology operations or expert support. Clarify tool coverage, alert-to-incident transition, change authority, data location, licensing and subcontractors. Test integrations across SIEM, firewalls, antivirus, NDR, EDR and cloud tools. In a demonstration, trace a high-risk signal through triage, ownership, containment, recovery and closure; assess response-time claims against evidence and measures.
