EDR and network detection tools: examples and selection

Compare product and service examples including Xcitium, Heimdal, Bitdefender, Snort, SentinelOne and CrowdStrike. Use practical criteria to evaluate EDR features, service scope and network IDS/IPS capabilities.

An endpoint security analyst investigates an EDR alert

Key takeaway

Compare tools by protected assets, investigation workflow, response authority, integrations and the team’s ability to operate them.

Compare capabilities against the work

EDR collects endpoint telemetry, supports investigation of suspicious behavior and enables device-level response. A network IDS/IPS examines traffic and can detect, log or block activity according to its rules and configuration. They observe different sources and serve different jobs; SIEM or integrations can bring their alerts into one investigation.

Evaluation areaEDRNetwork IDS/IPS
ObservesProcesses, files, users and endpoint connections.Network packets and selected traffic points.
InvestigationDevice history, process chains and related endpoints.Rule-matched traffic, network events and sensor logs.
ResponseDevice isolation and process or file actions, depending on product and policy.Alerting and logging in IDS mode; traffic intervention in IPS mode when configured.
Selection questionWhich endpoints must the team investigate and respond to?Which network segments need traffic visibility and detection?

Roles of the named tools

Compare products and services for endpoint investigation, network traffic inspection and managed response. In a pilot, test device coverage, analyst workflows and integrations.

Snort

Snort is an open-source network IDS/IPS for real-time traffic analysis and packet logging on IP networks. Depending on rules and deployment, it can act as a traffic analyzer, packet logger, alerting IDS or IPS. It is not endpoint EDR.

SentinelOne Singularity Endpoint

Singularity Endpoint provides behavioral detection and automated response. Storyline connects related events into an attack sequence; the product is offered for SaaS, on-premises, hybrid and air-gapped environments. The separate Singularity RemoteOps Forensics product supports endpoint evidence collection. Test OS, licensing and offline behavior for rollback and forensics in a pilot.

CrowdStrike Falcon

Falcon Insight Real Time Response lets authorized analysts inspect the file system, running processes, Windows event logs, registry and network connections, and collect process memory. Response actions include deleting files, killing processes and changing registry values; check roles and permissions for the selected license. Falcon Complete MDR is an around-the-clock managed response service.

Cynet 360

Cynet 360 combines endpoint detection and response with network analytics, user-behavior analysis and automated incident actions. Confirm required modules and response authority in the specific offer.

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint groups related alerts and supports investigation and response in the Microsoft Defender portal. Check operating-system coverage and the response actions available in the selected plan.

TrendAI Apex One

TrendAI Apex One provides endpoint protection and centralized management; Endpoint Sensor supports historical security investigations on protected devices. Check SaaS or on-premises deployment and the sensor and integration scope in the selected offer.

Carbon Black Enterprise EDR

Carbon Black Enterprise EDR collects endpoint telemetry and supports threat hunting over stored data. Searching previously uploaded data differs from querying the current state of a disconnected device. Check retention, the sensor’s local cache limit and data upload after reconnection.

Trellix EDR

Trellix EDR offers endpoint data collection, analytics, alert prioritization, real-time and historical searches, guided investigation and response actions on hosts through a cloud service. Trellix was formed in 2022 from the combination of McAfee Enterprise and FireEye; verify how any legacy product name maps to the current product and support terms.

ThreatDown EDR (Malwarebytes)

ThreatDown EDR is managed through the Nebula cloud console; MSPs can manage multiple customer environments through the multi-tenant OneView console. Its EDR policy offers suspicious-activity monitoring, endpoint isolation and ransomware rollback on Windows; the rollback cache is configurable from 1 to 7 days, with 3 days as the default. When enabled, Flight Recorder Search supports IOC searches across endpoint events retained for up to 30 days; check the policy because MDR and ITDR subscriptions can enable it by default. The Linking Engine is designed to remove residual malware artifacts and infection-induced changes. OneView also documents separate Windows brute-force protection for supported login protocols; check subscription and policy scope, OS support, the Windows Firewall requirement and port-forwarding limits in a pilot.

ESET Endpoint Security

ESET Endpoint Security is part of ESET’s managed endpoint protection lineup and can be managed through ESET PROTECT or On-Prem. Check platform, OS and feature coverage for the selected plan.

Kaspersky Next EDR Optimum

Kaspersky Next EDR Optimum combines endpoint detection, simplified investigation and automated response in a central console. Check regional availability, integrations and licensing when purchasing.

Cybereason EDR

Cybereason correlates events across devices into a malicious-operation view called MalOp. Response capabilities include process termination, file quarantine and device isolation; validate action permissions and telemetry coverage in the pilot.

FortiEDR

Fortinet lists Windows, macOS and Linux support for FortiEDR, along with offline protection. Check your operating systems and workloads, plus response behavior on disconnected devices, against the specific version and policy.

NetWitness Endpoint EDR

The NetWitness EDR agent collects endpoint inventory, installed software, system configuration and user-profile telemetry. NetWitness Platform can correlate endpoint, network and log data with UEBA; verify components and integrations in the current offer.

Evaluation and procurement criteria

Evaluate a real workflow: what activity should be visible on which asset, how will an analyst investigate it and who approves the response? Measure a pilot against criteria agreed in advance.

  1. Coverage and telemetry

List workstations, servers, mobile and cloud workloads, operating systems, network points and retention. Confirm licensing and agent requirements for each.

  2. Investigation and alert quality

Run a representative incident: device history, process relationships, indicator search, explainable alert, timeline, evidence export and investigation steps.

  3. Response and governance

Document which policies govern isolation, blocking, quarantine, rollback or network action, who approves them and what runs automatically. For rollback, check the supported OS, configured window and cache limit, then run a recovery test. Test correction of a false positive.

  4. Integration and operating effort

Check data flow with SIEM, identity, ITSM, cloud and existing controls. Estimate time for administration, tuning, updates, training, support and service escalation.

  5. XDR coverage and ecosystem fit

Check which sources beyond endpoints are actually correlated, what third-party integrations provide, and the added licensing, retention, deployment and administration they require. Compare fit inside the vendor ecosystem and with existing tools against the same scenario.

  6. Read research in context

For a Gartner Magic Quadrant or other market research, check the publication date, market scope and evaluation criteria. A vendor’s position in that report is not an overall ranking of EDR products; consider it alongside your pilot and requirements.
